Fair Finance Agency is the initiative of three social finance experts: Koert Jansen, David Cousland and Diego Brenes. After many years within
Triodos Bank and Root Capital respectively, they knew that they shared the same core values and the same desire to make a difference: to facilitate making projects happen that deliver social and environmental impact. Throughout their professional careers, they have witnessed many barriers that prevent successful financing relationships in this sector. Koert, David and Diego seek to use their extensive experience to overcome those barriers and make money work in a positive way.
Before starting FFA, I spent most of my working life with Triodos Bank. As an investment officer and later as a fund manager, I had the opportunity to finance clients around the world, with a focus on agriculture and Africa. As a fund manager of Triodos Sustainable Trade Fund I was able to broaden my focus, to also interact with the ultimate investors, both public and private.
Within FFA, my main focus is on agricultural finance in developing countries / emerging markets. My interest in agriculture extends to my private life: I am a passionate organic vegetable gardener. "Passionate'' in this case is not to be confused with ''good''.
Next to my FFA activities, I am combining different part-time functions. I am managing director of Incluvest B.V. , portfolio manager with the Common Fund for Commodities and associated consultant with Fair & Sustainable B.V.. I am furthermore member of the supervisory board of Fair Match Support and board member of Wine of Hope.
Prior to FFA I worked for 16 years with Triodos Bank. Firstly as an Investment Manager based in Bristol, specialising in lending to ethical
businesses before returning to Scotland in 2004 to develop and establish the bank there as a Senior Manager. I am recognised as a pioneer for
sustainable banking and supporting my customers in realising their vision for their projects. I have a track record of developing relationships with
individuals and organisations that are working for greater sustainability throughout Scotland.
A year spent in Latin America fundamentally changed my career goals. Having worked for 2 of the largest UK brewers, I sought a career where I
could make a difference. Firstly by moving to a Latin American fairtrade importer and retailer as General Manager leading me into joining
Alongside fairtrade, I have a particular passion for the craft of producing natural wines.
I have worked over 20 years in banking, private equity and supply chain finance. For the last ten years, I focused my efforts in working with high
social and environmental impact organizations in both developing and industrialized countries.
I worked for eight years Root Capital, a non-for profit social lender, where I led the credit department. During my time at Root Capital, I had the
opportunity of working with smallholder agricultural organizations in over 30 countries in Latin America and Africa and Asia.
I am passionate about all aspects of sustainability, rural development and smallholder agriculture.
